HISTORY OF BARANGAY CANTABON
Barangay Cantabon is located in the municipality of Siquijor, within the province of Siquijor, Philippines. As of the 2020 Census, it has a population of 482 residents, accounting for approximately 1.67% of the municipality’s total population. Geographically, Cantabon is situated at approximately 9.1859° North latitude and 123.5615° East longitude, with an elevation of about 453.3 meters (1,487.2 feet) above sea level.
Cantabon is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, particularly its association with traditional healing practices. The barangay is home to several healers, known locally as “mananambal,” who engage in rituals and herbal medicine preparation, especially during the Lenten season. During the seven Fridays of Lent, these healers participate in a practice called “pangalap,” where they gather various ingredients from sacred places such as mountains, seas, caves, churches. These ingredients are then used to brew healing potions in a process known as “pagluto.”
In addition to its cultural significance, Cantabon is also known for the Cantabon Cave, a popular tourist attraction. The cave offers an adventurous trail featuring numerous stalactites and a stream of fresh water that creates natural swimming pools, making it a unique destination for visitors to Siquijor.
